Purple Day - Epilepsy Awareness…
Wear purple to bring awareness and support those living with Epilepsy today.

First Aid advice - When to call an ambulance

Usually, when a person has a seizure, there is no need to call 999 for an ambulance. However, always do call an ambulance if:

- you know it is the person’s first seizure
they have injured themselves badly
- they have trouble breathing after the seizure has stopped
- one seizure immediately follows another with no recovery in between
- the seizure lasts two minutes longer than is usual for them, or
- you do not know how long their seizures last.

For someone you do not know, follow our basic first aid message: Calm, Cushion, Call.
Some people recover quickly from a tonic clonic seizure, but often they will be very tired, want to sleep, and may not feel back to normal for several hours or sometimes days.

🚨 Lithium Battery Fires: The Hidden Danger in Seconds 🚨

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere – phones, e-bikes, laptops, power tools – but when they fail, they don’t burn like “normal” fires.

🔥 What kind of smoke do lithium batteries produce?
When a lithium battery goes into thermal runaway, it releases a thick, highly toxic smoke made up of dangerous gases such as hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and other volatile organic compounds.

⚠️ Why is the smoke so dangerous?
	•	Hydrogen fluoride – highly corrosive, can cause severe respiratory damage
	•	Carbon monoxide – prevents oxygen from being carried in the blood
	•	Hydrogen cyanide – interferes with the body’s ability to use oxygen at a cellular level
	•	Irritates eyes, skin, and airways almost immediately
	•	Can cause confusion, collapse, or unconsciousness very quickly

⏱️ How quickly can smoke fill a room?
Faster than most people realise.
Lithium battery fires produce large volumes of dense, toxic smoke extremely quickly. A single battery can fill a room in under a minute, with visibility dropping to near zero in seconds.

📉 What this means in real life:
	•	You may only have seconds to react, not minutes
	•	Smoke, not flames, is often the biggest threat
	•	Early detection (working smoke alarms) is critical
	•	Charging batteries unattended or overnight increases risk
